Prophetic medicine, inspired by the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), serves as a timeless guide combining faith, hygiene, and natural remedies.

In his book "Prophetic Medicine", Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyya provides a unique perspective, blending the spiritual and physical aspects of health.

This article delves into the key teachings of the book, highlighting the balance between faith and medicine in Islamic tradition.

Before diving into the content, watch this short video about the importance of good health in Islam.

I. Health in Islam: A Blessing and a Responsibility

1. The Importance of Health

In Islam, health is considered one of the greatest blessings Allah bestows upon His servants. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"Whoever wakes up in good health, safe among his family, and has enough food for the day, it is as if the whole world has been given to him." (Reported by Tirmidhi)

Ibn al-Qayyim begins his book by emphasizing gratitude toward Allah for this blessing. He reminds us that preserving both physical and spiritual health is a responsibility, as the body is an amana (trust) from Allah.

2. The Balance Between Body and Soul

In the Islamic view, the body and soul are interconnected. Physical illnesses can affect the soul, and vice versa.

For example, emotions such as pride or anger can weaken the spiritual heart and manifest as physical ailments.

Ibn al-Qayyim explains that the spiritual state plays a central role in healing.

II. Foundations of Prophetic Medicine

1. Prevention Before Cure

One of the fundamental principles of prophetic medicine is preventing illnesses before they occur. This includes:

  • Moderate Eating: Avoiding excess is a constant recommendation of the Prophet (peace be upon him), who said:
"The son of Adam fills no container worse than his stomach." (Reported by Ibn Majah)
  • Physical Activity: The Prophet encouraged activities such as walking and horseback riding.
  • Healthy Emotional Management: Stress and anxiety are recognized as causes of illness.

2. The Role of Faith

Faith plays a crucial role in healing. Ibn al-Qayyim emphasizes that hope in Allah, supplications (du’as), and recitation of the Quran can strengthen both body and spirit. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Patience is a light." (Reported by Muslim) This patience is essential during times of illness, as it strengthens the soul and helps endure trials.

3. Hygiene and Purity

Hygiene occupies a central place in prophetic medicine. Ablutions, washing hands, and using the siwak (arak stick) are all practices encouraged to prevent diseases. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"Cleanliness is half of faith." (Reported by Muslim)

III. Three Types of Illnesses

Ibn al-Qayyim distinguishes three main categories of illnesses:

  1. Spiritual Illnesses: These affect the spiritual heart, such as doubt, pride, or hypocrisy. They can lead a person away from divine guidance. The Quran says:
"In their hearts is a disease, and Allah has increased their disease." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:10)
  2. Psychological Illnesses: Anxiety, sadness, or anger are disorders that affect both mind and body. Ibn al-Qayyim recommends specific supplications to alleviate them, such as:
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety, sorrow, incapacity, and laziness." (Reported by Bukhari)
  3. Physical Illnesses: Examples include injuries, infections, or digestive issues. To treat these, Ibn al-Qayyim suggests natural remedies combined with total reliance on Allah.

IV. Prophetic Remedies: Natural and Spiritual Medicine

1. Natural Remedies

Ibn al-Qayyim highlights several natural elements used by the Prophet (peace be upon him) for healing:

  • Honey:
"There is healing in honey for mankind." (Surah An-Nahl, 16:69) Honey is recommended for digestive issues and wounds.
  • Black Seed (Nigella Sativa):
"Use the black seed, for it contains a cure for every disease except death." (Reported by Bukhari)
  • Zamzam Water:
"Zamzam water is for whatever it is drunk for." (Reported by Ibn Majah) It is used as both a spiritual and physical remedy.
  • Dates: Rich in nutrients, dates are particularly recommended to strengthen the body.

2. Ruqya: Spiritual Healing

Ruqya involves reciting Quranic verses or specific supplications for protection or healing. For example, Surah Al-Fatiha and Ayat Al-Kursi are widely used to alleviate spiritual and psychological troubles.

3. Hijama (Cupping Therapy)

Hijama is a therapeutic method mentioned in prophetic teachings, involving the extraction of impure blood to purify the body. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

"The best treatment you can use is hijama." (Reported by Bukhari)

V. Supplications for Healing

Ibn al-Qayyim stresses the importance of supplications in the healing process. Here are a few examples:

  • For Healing:
"O Lord, remove the harm. O Lord of the people, heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Yours. Grant healing that leaves no trace of illness." (Reported by Muslim)
  • For Protection: The Prophet regularly recited this supplication for protection:
"In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can harm." (Reported by Tirmidhi)
  • To Soothe the Soul:
"Allahumma inni a'oudhou bika minal hammi wal hazan…" This supplication is specifically recommended for anxiety and sadness.

VI. Prophetic Medicine and Modern Science

1. A Clear Complementarity

Although prophetic medicine is based on spiritual principles, it does not conflict with modern medicine. Ibn al-Qayyim emphasizes that natural remedies should be complemented by human effort and scientific research.

2. A Holistic Approach

Unlike contemporary medicine, which often focuses on treating symptoms, prophetic medicine aims to address the root cause of illnesses, considering spiritual and emotional well-being.

VII. Practical Teachings of Prophetic Medicine

  1. Moderation in Daily Life: The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised eating moderately, avoiding excessive sleep, and managing emotions. This helps maintain bodily balance.
  2. The Importance of Intention: Ibn al-Qayyim reminds us that even in the healing process, intention plays a vital role. Trusting Allah while seeking treatment is essential.
  3. Patience and Gratitude: Illness is seen as a trial that purifies sins. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"No fatigue, illness, sorrow, or pain afflicts a believer without Allah expiating their sins." (Reported by Bukhari)

VIII. Conclusion: A Timeless Source of Inspiration

"Prophetic Medicine" by Ibn al-Qayyim remains a valuable guide for Muslims and beyond. It encourages a balanced approach where faith and medical treatments work together. This book reminds us that true healing comes from Allah and that health is a sacred trust to be preserved with care. By integrating these teachings into our daily lives, we can not only strengthen our physical health but also cultivate a peaceful soul, mindful of Allah’s infinite wisdom.
