The Three Modes of Quran Recitation: Tahqiq, Hadr and Tadwir

October 9, 2020 – Al-Dirassa Institute

Tajwid lesson about Quran recitation modes

Introduction

In this twenty-fourth Tajweed lesson, we will explore the different modes of reciting the Holy Quran. These modes, recognized by scholars, allow for a richer recitation while respecting the rules of Tajweed.

Allah commands in the Holy Quran that it should be recited carefully:

وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا

“And recite the Quran slowly and clearly.” (Surah Al-Muzzammil, 73:4)

The modes of recitation are divided into three main categories:

  • At-Tahqiqالتَّحْقِيق
  • Al-Hadrالحَدْر
  • At-Tadwirالتَّدْوير

These three methods are permissible, and each reader may choose the one that suits them, provided that the rules of Tajweed are respected.

1. At-Tahqiq — التَّحْقِيق

Definition

At-Tahqiq is a slow, precise and meditative form of recitation. It consists of articulating each letter carefully while respecting its characteristics and rights. This mode is particularly suitable for memorization and reflection upon the meanings of the Quran.

Example of slow recitation

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

Beware of exaggeration: At-Tamtit — التَّمْطِيط

During this type of recitation, it is important not to exaggerate the elongation of letters. This mistake is known as At-Tamtit.

Common mistake: in the word كُنتُم, the letter و should not be excessively prolonged by saying كُونتُم.

Another example: in إِنَّ الَّذِينَ, it is incorrect to pronounce it as إِيْنَّ الَّذِينَ by adding an elongation to the kasrah.

2. Al-Hadr — الحَدْر

Definition

Al-Hadr is a fast mode of recitation while still respecting the rules of Tajweed. This method is suitable for revision and for completing the recitation of the Quran, especially during Ramadan.

Example of fast recitation

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

Precautions to take

When reciting quickly, it is essential not to merge letters in a way that distorts the words.

Common mistake: in وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِي السَّمَاءِ, some people pronounce جَعَنا, omitting the letter ل (Lam).

3. At-Tadwir — التَّدْوير

Definition

At-Tadwir is an intermediate mode of recitation, neither too slow nor too fast. It is the most common method, ideal for maintaining reflection while progressing smoothly through the recitation.

Benefits

This mode offers a balance between precision and rhythm, making it easier to understand the text fluently while respecting the rules of Tajweed.

The Importance of Tajweed in Recitation

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.”
Reported by Al-Bukhari.

To honor this responsibility, it is essential to master the rules of Tajweed in order to recite the Quran correctly and preserve its divine meaning.
